The Winterlude series of exhibitions was mooted in Bathurst in 1997. Charles Sturt University Winter and Summer School tutorials attracted a number of artists over many years who were housed in various student dormitories. One night, in the diggings, over a few beers, in the midst of singing and story telling someone wished out loud, wouldn’t it be great to paint together. The first paint out took place in Bathurst in May - June 1997. Good work was done; great fun was had – singing by a camp fire on the river bank, stories, serious discussions on art, life, love. More than anything there was constant raucous laughter.
The next idea was logical, given that the trip was an interlude to normal life and that it had happened in the winter the name Winterlude was settled on. Why not exhibit the word born of the trip? So the concept of the 'Winterlude' series of paint outs and exhibitions was created.
The 2007 Winterlude Exhibition showcased paintings from SOUTH AMERICA where the boys, Patrick Carroll, Nic Canosa, Herman Pekel and Joseph Zbukvic caught up with Alvaro Castagnet for the paint out week.
While the group known as "Winterlude" has after ten years finished, the artists still remain freinds and get together when they can. In 2009 they have agreed to exhibit together under the name "Interlude" - the subjects will be of their own choice and not a destination represented by the five.
Following the Interlude 2009, the boys agreed to bi-annual exhibitions through Jenny Pihan Fine Art for the group. 2011 was the next exhibiton and we look forward to 2013. Paintings by each of these dynamic artists is available through Jenny Pihan Fine Art at all times.
